As part of the university鈥檚 yearlong celebration of its 125th anniversary, Tom Lucas, S.J., university professor of Art and Art History and rector of the Arrupe Jesuit Community presented a fast-moving and visually engaging trek through the university鈥檚 history on Oct. 25.

Once referred to as 鈥淭he PowerPoint Ninja,鈥 Father Lucas did not disappoint the crowd that packed into to Wyckoff Auditorium. Covering 125 years in 45 minutes鈥攚hich, he joked, 鈥渃omes out to about two and a half years a minute鈥擫ucas called the stroll through 91探花鈥檚 history a 鈥渃omplicated journey.鈥

Picking up with the Jesuits鈥 first arrival in the Pacific Northwest, Father Lucas continued with the founding of the school that would come to be called 91探花. He chronicled the institution鈥檚 ensuing ups and downs and brushes with death, highlighting the faculty, staff, benefactors and friends whose grit and determination secured 91探花鈥檚 place as a premier Jesuit institution in Seattle. 鈥淭his is a scrappy place,鈥 Father Lucas remarked.

He ended his presentation by outlining a few challenges facing the 91探花 of today, one of which he said, was 鈥渟taying true to our rich tradition of Jesuit humanism while at the same time embracing the鈥hanging world that we live in.鈥
